Bi-folding doors remain one of the best ways to create a genuinely open connection between your home and garden.
Unlike sliding doors, where part of the opening remains glazed, bi-folding doors can fold back almost completely, leaving the majority of the opening clear.
Whether it’s a smaller extension or a much larger opening, modern aluminium systems give us enormous flexibility in panel sizes, configurations and finishes.
The important thing is getting the specification right for your home.
How Big Can Bi-Folding Doors Be?
Much bigger than most people realise.
Depending on the system, glass specification and configuration, individual bi-folding door panels can reach approximately:
UP TO 4.5m HIGH
UP TO 1.5m WIDE
These are maximum capabilities, not sizes we would automatically recommend.
Sometimes fewer, larger panels create exactly the look you want. On another project, more smaller panels may operate better, stack more neatly or simply suit the building better.

Depending on your home and the size of the opening, options can include:
- Inward or outward opening doors.
- Panels stacking left, right or in both directions.
- Everyday traffic doors.
- Low and flush thresholds.

Because we offer different aluminium systems, we’re not trying to make one bi-folding door suit every project.

Flush Thresholds Look Great. But Location Matters.
A flush threshold can create a beautiful transition between your home and garden, but it needs to be specified properly.
A sheltered opening beneath an overhang is very different from an exposed elevation taking driving wind and rain.
External levels, drainage and weather exposure all matter. If we believe a completely flush threshold is inappropriate for your property, we’ll tell you and explain the alternatives.
Bi-Folding Or Sliding Doors?
For larger openings, it’s worth considering both.
Bi-folding doors allow almost the entire opening to be opened. Sliding doors generally provide larger uninterrupted areas of glass and fewer vertical frames when closed.
Neither is automatically better.
It depends whether your priority is the view when the doors are closed or creating the largest possible opening when they’re open.
Get The Important Details Right
Large openings need appropriate structural support. Thresholds, drainage and finished floor levels need to work with the doors.
These aren’t reasons to make the project complicated.
They’re simply things that need getting right before manufacture rather than discovering them during installation.
